It’s about time the daffodils and cherry blossoms are in full bloom! We’ve had a long cold winter in Victoria B.C and we’re all ready for some gardening in the sunshine! Here are some of my top gardening tips and favourite flowers to spruce up the garden this Spring!

Step 1: Weed and prune!

The first thing I do every year is pull any weeds and prune my plants! Make sure to get all the dead branches and leaves off from the previous year. I usually do this in March but if you haven’t done it yet, do so now. Make sure to research where to cut down your plants when pruning, you don’t want to cut them all to the ground. For example

pruning a Hydrangea, I like to keep the framework and just cut all the dead branches off to keep the main body.

Step 2: Pick your petals

If you’re starting from a blank slate, lucky you! You get to go wild at the nursery and learn about all the plants that will work in your garden. Before you go shopping, there are three things to think about before you start planting:
A) The soil: what are the PH levels? Do I need to add rich soil like sea soil? How is the drainage? Talk to an expert at the nursery about what type of soil you need for your garden.
B) The second thing is sunlight! Get out a compass and figure out which way your garden faces. Will it be partial sun (less than 6 hours a day) or full sun (6+ hours)? This is really important when it comes to choosing what plants to purchase.

Perennials or Annuals?

What type of flowers do you want? There’s two types of plants: perennials (flowers/scrubs that comes back every year) or annuals (plants that die off every year). Whether you’re starting out with a blank slate, or you have a mature garden, you’ll always be adding plants and thinking about where to put the permanent plants, or the annuals we want to buy each year

If you have a mature garden already, your perennial scrubs are getting new buds but the garden looks BLAH because the scrubs aren’t too big yet and there’s not much color. Maybe you have some bulbs you planted last fall that are finally out but it’s time to get a little more color while we wait for that lush summer garden to fully bloom.

My Favourite Picks

Some of my favorite flowers to plant in the Spring are Pansies, Hellebore and Heather. Pansies come in so many colors, it’s a fast way to add more color to your garden or hanging basskets. If we get another cold snap they will be just fine and last to the summer time. Hellobore is a short plant that only blooms in the spring time, it likes shade and would survive through frost. Lastly, Heather, this is a perennial scrub that blooms in the spring time that comes in pinks, purples and whites. You can put them in a line or purchase in threes. They are low so you will add them to the front of your garden and save the real estate I the back for taller plants!

Where to shop?

There are so many great places to get plants around Victoria. We shop at Garden Works (https://www.gardenworks.ca/) which has locations in Saanich, Oak Bay and Colwood. Or you could check out Lochside Nursery (http://www.lochside.ca/)

I hope this article helped you and you’re excited for some Spring planting!
